New efforts to protect cultural heritage on Brač.
The oldest settlement on the island of Brač will become the first location in Supetar, the island's largest town, to directly receive European funds for co-financing of a local project, reports Poslovni.hr on August 16, 2017.
The revitalization of the cultural and historical part of Škrip, a settlement whose history is almost 3,000 years old, is a project led by the Town of Supetar which, in cooperation with the local tourist board and the Museum of the Island of Brač, is striving to put to good use cultural and historical resources of the settlement which is today home for just 80 people.
“The Central Financing and Contracting Agency for EU projects informed us that the project proposal has successfully passed the acceptance control phase and will now enter the final phase before the signing of the contract,” said Ivana Marković, the Mayor of Supetar, pointing out that the total value of the project at this stage (drafting of project documentation) was about two million kuna, with the EU accepting to co-finance it in the amount of 1.5 million kunas.
The project includes the works on the archaeological site next to the island museum, the renovation of the church of St. John the Baptist and of the supporting wall of the church of St. Jelena, the renovation of the Kaštel Radojković built in 1570, as well as the works on the site of a bitumen mine where the construction of the Minjera Mine presentation center is planned.
In order to make this island's jewel an even better attraction for tourists, the intention is to improve the offer of the existing museum which would become a multimedia centre, with the former St. Anthony church being transformed into a museum, while the sculpture park would be converted into a recreational zone, with pedestrian and bicycle paths.
“Although the settlement of Škrip is an almost negligible part of the Supetar tourist industry, the fact that the Museum of the Island of Brač is visited by more than 15,000 people a year demonstrates the importance of Škrip for the town and the whole island. The primary goal is to put to good use all the attractions of Škrip. I am sure that, by implementing this and other projects defined in the Tourism Development Strategy for the Supetar area, we will make Škrip an even more attractive tourist destination, revitalize its resources, and ensure the survival and quality of life for young people,” said Ivan Cvitanić , director of the Supetar Tourist Board.
