The Croatian creative industry can be expected to give a much larger contribution to the affirmation of Croatian wines on the global market

“This is not just a business. Our days are composed of hundreds of lovely and tough moments which make us proud of the wines we create for all honest, human moments you will experience drinking them. Without any big words, fancy labels or glittering adverts, for us this is life, true dedication to the production of great wines. This may be why Matković wines have this odd power. To inspire some small, untold truths which are hard to share, just like wine.” This is how the mission statement of the Matković winery sounds like, recently receiving a significant recognition for design.

The Lürzer’s Archive magazine, for over 20 years a synonym for superior creativity devoted six pages to them and the cover of the special edition published every two years to present the best global packaging design. Credit for this success goes to the Zagreb-based Señor agency which developed the Matković’s unusual packaging concept, basing it on the topics from the beginning of this text. Every bottle of Matković wines humorously unveils a small, human moment from a life with wine, in which almost every consumer can find themselves. “I left the key for you on the stand and took one last look at the apartment that used to be ours. The Pinot Nero in my hand was empty. Just like me,” is written on the label of the Pinot Nero. “My heart was beating, my breath grew shorter. I can’t tell if it was the cuvee or your lips truly taste like sour cherries,” says another. “They usually connect us with great campaigns, and this is why we are glad to have entered this selection as another proof of a creative approach to packaging which we view as an excellent medium on the first line of consumer communication,” said Señor’s chief creative director Vanja Blumenšajn.

After innovative labels by Studio Sonda for the Istrian Piquentum winery, and the many awards for the design made by Bruketa&Žinić agency for Stina Vina, the Croatian creative industry can be expected to give a much larger contribution to the affirmation of Croatian wines on the global market.
