Tomislav Mihaljević MD, a cardiac surgeon who currently works in both Abu Dhabi and Cleveland, was named the new president and CEO of the world-class clinic in the US
After the groundbreaking surgeon from Rijeka and the director of the 'Prim Dr Martin Horvat' hospital in Rovinj, another medical expert from Croatia makes international headlines. Tomislav Mihaljević MD, a cardiac surgeon from Zagreb, became the president and CEO of the renowned Cleveland Clinic in the US, reported Jutarnji on September 1, 2017.
Mihaljević graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Zagreb in 1989. He started his career by volunteering at the former Central Institute for Tumors and Related Diseases in Zagreb; as he didn't get the opportunity to secure a permanent position, he decided to move abroad. He lived and worked in Austria and Switzerland, where he was mentored by the world-renowned surgeon Marko Turina. He later moved to the US, where he spent the next ten years working in the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, one of the most distinguished hospitals specialising in heart disease treatment.
After pursuing a subspecialty in cardiovascular surgery at the Harvard University, Mihaljević perfected minimally invasive surgery, heart transplantation, and artificial heart implantation. In 2004, he started working in the Cleveland Clinic, a multispecialty academic hospital in Cleveland; when the Cleveland Clinic Foundation opened a branch in the United Arab Emirates in 2015, Mihaljević became CEO of the new hospital in the Abu Dhabi where he currently manages 5000 employees.
Starting from June 1, 2018, he will take over as CEO back in Cleveland, where the board named him president by a unanimous vote. Congratulations!
