Weekend In Baranja – Spirit Of The Roman Empire

By 15 September 2017

When in Rome... Or Osijek?

Baranja has a really fascinating history that stems as far back to 4-5000 BC. Even back in those times the settlers were reknowned for their activities and discoveries.

During 4th century BC, the celts began to settle here, and formed a colony called Mursa, what is now Osijek. In the 1st Century AD the Romans came and built fortifications, as well as roads and bridges, taking over the Celtic settlements. They also built the fortifications, that are still present today around the region.

This weekend, event organisers Priviligeum will present a weekend of activities that will re-enact the way Romans lived here in Baranja. Visitors will be able to enjoy an extensive program including a Roman Legionairres, in full battle dress. In addition there will be a typical Roman Village, activities for all the family, including a childrens workshop. Ladies will be able to treat themselves to a Roman hairstyle too!

A blacksmith will also be on site, to show how tradtional crafts were relied on to keep the Roman Empire in tip top form. Locals will prepare a smorgasbord of traditional local cuisine, and of course local fine wine. Throughout the day there will be an infantry march towards Kopački Rit, who are also supporting the event. The soldiers will also demonstrate combat manouveres and tactics learned from the historical records of the Roman military.

There are many hidden Roman sites througout the region, that are slowly coming to the surface. It is a part of the history of the region, and forms the foundation of Osijek today. Excavations of particular sites of interest are ongoing throughout the region and in the city itself. Event organiser Edita Kalajdžić, believes we shall not lose sight of our past, as it was an important precursor to the establishment of Osijek.

It serves as a reminder to the local population the importance of the Roman era, and of Osijek.

The Spirit of The Roman Empire is supported by the County of Baranja, Kopacki Rit, Town of Bilje as well as several Tourist Agencies. Full details of the weekend activities can be found here!
