Pretty in Pink: Dalmatian Firemen Mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month

By 25 October 2017

If I told you to picture a firefighter, your mind would probably go to that default fireman image - men clad in full protective gear, heads half hidden by helmets, faces covered in streaks of ash, whites of their eyes slowly turning red by each passing hour in the field.

Okay, but what if I told you to picture those same men with their suits unbuttoned? Any chance you thought of a risqué calendar? Fireman of the month, something of the sort? You'd be close, but not quite right.

The fire brigade from Dugopolje published a very peculiar photograph earlier today. Six firemen in front of a fire engine, their suits unzipped, flashing the camera with bright wide smiles... and hot pink bras.

Halloween might be just around the corner, but we're not talking about any kind of costume here. The fashion extravaganza in question is a result of an entirely different initiative, as the brave boys from Dugopolje wanted to raise awareness about a certain health issue.

According to their own words, considering they are already known for their public work and their humanity, they wanted to carry out an action to raise awareness about breast cancer, paying tribute to many people around the word who are fighting this grave disease.

They also stated they decided to sport the flashy bras to point to the fact that men get affected by breast cancer as well, as 2% of all breast cancer patients are male.

'Prevention and early detection are the best ways to fight this disease; in the early stages of development, the chance of recovery is above 80%, dropping to 30-40% in the advanced stage', stated this special pink fire brigade, appealing to their followers to check out the website of the Europa Donna Association and learn more about breast cancer.

'You're not alone', says the inscription put up on their fire engine. It might be a somewhat unconventional approach, but any initiative raising awareness about one of the most widespread health issues is a commendable one. Bravo, boys!
