UNISpoT App to Improve Life Quality of College Students in Split

By 10 November 2017

Designed by students, for students.

Thanks to a new app called UNISpoT, students of the University of Split can look forward to some improvements in their daily routine. There’ll be no more unnecessary waiting in line at cafeterias, no need to call your colleagues in order to find out what’s on the menu; the app will also enable them to keep track of the remaining funds on their student cards and to stay informed about the student job market, reports Slobodna Dalmacija on November 10, 2017.

The app was created by Ivan Žižić, an employee at the Student Centre in Split, and his team of developers: Matej Rajčić, Mateo Marušić and Ante Banovac, all of them students at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture (FESB), joined by Bartul Kovačić, a highschool student from Split.

Žižić devised the idea aiming to make the lives of students easier; if they spent less time queuing in cafeterias, they could put that time to better use by studying for their final exams. When he was a student himself, he used to be the president of the University Student Council, so he has a great deal of experience when it comes to issues students face – on both sides of the coin.

The project was developed in two phases; the first entailed building a system that would provide information about all available student jobs in one place, then they built another system to display updated menus in college cafeterias and expanded the app to include information about possible queues.

Marušić said he was most proud about the ‘mailbox of confidence’, a service that enables users to anonymously send in their comments or complaints in regards to the University. He invited all the students in Split to download the app to see first-hand how useful it is.

UNISpoT was financed by 15.000 kuna, provided by the University of Split. Rector Šimun Anđelinović said the invested funds were almost negligible, considering the app was created by innovative students and mentors coming from the University itself.

Bartul Kovačić, the youngest part of the team and the main developer, said the project presented a challenge. "We had a lot to do. But with great cooperation and mutual support in the team, as well as the support from Žižić, we overcame all obstacles and met our deadlines", he said.

Congratulations to the talented young team!
