Croats to Spend Billions on Christmas Gifts

Two thirds of Croatian citizens will spend less than 500 kunas on buying Christmas gifts this year, while only 5.3 percent will spend more than a thousand kuna, according to a survey conducted by the Hendal agency in November on a sample of 400 citizens over the age of 15, reports tportal.hr on December 15, 2017.

The survey showed that most Croatian citizens were planning to buy Christmas gifts (84.4 percent), with 34 percent expected to spend up to 200 kunas and 29.8 percent up to 500 kunas. Up to a thousand kunas will be spent by 15.3 percent of citizens, and more than a thousand kuna by 5.3 percent.

On the other hand, 15.6 percent of respondents did not plan to buy any Christmas gifts.

Most citizens, 59.5 percent of those who will buy gifts, will spend roughly the same amount as last year. About 23 percent plan to decrease their Christmas gifts spending compared to the previous year, while 17.2 percent of the survey participants will spend more this year.

The majority of citizens will buy their Christmas gifts in traditional stores (62.4 percent), while as many as 37.6 percent of consumers will instead rely on online shopping this year.

For 53.7 percent of surveyed consumers, the Christmas gift shopping represents a pleasure, while 39.5 percent experience both satisfaction and stress. The purchase of Christmas gifts is an extremely stressful event for 6.8 percent of respondents.

Another significant expenditure at this time of year is winter skiing holidays. The same survey showed that 10.3 percent of citizens plan to travel somewhere this winter, while a vast majority of 89.7 percent of respondents will spend whole winter in the home towns and villages.
