The largest and most powerful global spy agency is always on the lookout for ambitious employees
If you speak Croatian, Bosnian or Serbian, you may be a perfect candidate to work in the largest spy agency in the world. The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is looking for people with excellent knowledge of these languages. Besides the “opportunity to defend the United States of America,” potential new employees receive cash bonuses up to 35.000 USD, depending on their language knowledge and future function, right upon employment, Express.hr reported on December 16, 2017.
Probably the most tempting job position is the one of foreign language instructor at CIA’s headquarters in Washington with an annual salary of 161.900 USD, without various bonuses, which is around a million kuna. “CIA provides first-class training for energetic, creative and committed intelligence professionals. CIA Language Instructors deliver programs that provide students with the foreign language communications skills and cross-cultural awareness they need to live and work abroad effectively,” states the job advert, among other information.
If you are interested in something more operative, CIA is also looking for candidates to collect and process, but also make use of, open sources of information with a somewhat lower salary, but perhaps slightly more exciting work.
“As an Open Source Exploitation Officer (OSEO) for the CIA, you will discover, collect, and assess foreign-based publicly available information, also known as Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) in a dynamic, ever-expanding digital environment. OSINT spans traditional media, academic papers, geospatial data and technology, datasets, social media, and plays an important role in all aspects of Agency work. As an OSEO, you will develop plans that use effective tools and methodologies to research and collect open source information. Using your knowledge of a geographic or subject area, the open source information environment, and language proficiency, you will convey your findings in written products and briefings,” stated the advertisement, with a note of “possible domestic and foreign travel.”
Digital Targeters (DT) is another operative position for intelligence officers in the CIA. Or as the advert states: “creative architects and enablers for cutting edge operations focused on a wide range of priorities. They apply technical expertise to exploit clandestine and publically available information (also known as open source data) using specialized methodologies and digital tools to plan, initiate and support HUMINT, technical, and blended operations. DTs are investigative, pragmatic, driven to develop innovative digital solutions to complex problems, and effectively communicate these solutions to non-technical partners. They are strongly supported to continuously advance and refine their technical, analytic, and exploitation skills. Concurrently, DT's serve as primary digital interlocutors with key CIA and Intelligence partners.”
All applicants must pass rigorous testing, with one of the conditions being abstinence form drug use in the past year, tested with CIA’s own methodology.
“Friends, family, individuals, or organizations may be interested to learn that you are an applicant for or an employee of the CIA. Their interest, however, may not be benign or in your best interest. You cannot control whom they would tell. We therefore ask you to exercise discretion and good judgment in disclosing your interest in a position with the Agency,” says a warning in all their job adverts.
