By 11 February 2018

ZAGREB, February 11, 2018 - The International Carnival Parade of the 35th annual Rijeka Carnival began in the northern Adriatic port at noon on Sunday, with 104 groups of over 10,000 masked participants and 71 allegorical floats passing through the city centre.

The parade included 12 masked groups from Croatia and 10 from abroad - Italy, Slovenia, Belgium, Montenegro, Serbia and Macedonia.

After the last group passes through the city centre, the Pust puppet will be set on fire and a firework display held in the harbour, followed by costumed parties around Rijeka.

The carnival parade marks the end of a festive season which occurs before Lent, a period of approximately six weeks observed by Christians before Easter Sunday. This year Lent starts on Ash Wednesday on February 14.
