Space Station Camera Captures Storm on Adriatic in Sunrise Video

By 13 March 2018

Thunderstorms seem way more appealing when you look at them from a different perspective.

Any person living in Rijeka would be happy to inform you we're blessed with frequent bouts of incessant rain and thunder, a perfect display of weather you'd definitely expect in a city situated on the Adriatic coast. One such occasion hit us a week ago, and let me tell you, we're at our nerves' end waiting for spring. (Which doesn't mean a lot in Rijeka, 'cause spring only brings more rain... what can you do.)

And then, I stumbled upon a rare opportunity to see what those notorious thunderstorms on the northern Adriatic look like from above - not only from above, but from space.

The International Space Station (ISS) captured a lovely sunrise video while passing over Europe and towards Africa, including a stretch of the Adriatic coast. The video was published on the Facebook page Physics-Astronomy.com; starting from around 0:25, you'll see a view of Italy and the Adriatic sea, with the Croatian coast shrouded in a veil of clouds. Look at those little flashes of thunder! Sometimes, you just have to look at things from a different perspective and they'll suddenly seem less bad.
