"Fišijada" to Bring Together 200 Masters of Fish Stew

“Fiš” is a popular fish stew prepared in the Baranja region.

More than 200 cooks from three countries will take part in the largest “Fišijada”, a fish stew cooking competition, in Croatia. It will be held in Beli Manastir, as part of the Autumn in Baranja event. The cooks from Croatia, Hungary and Serbia will prepare dishes which will be enjoyed by local guests and tourists, reports Lokalni.hr on August 23, 2018.

The Fišijada will take place on Saturday, September 8, at the central square in Beli Manastir, when the whole town will be enjoying the smells of the popular Baranja delicacy.

The Town of Beli Manastir and the Baranja Tourist Board are the main organisers of the largest fish stew cooking competition in Croatia, which has been traditionally held in September for the last 15 years. Its goal is to preserve the gastronomic, folklore and cultural traditions of the region.

“The tourist significance of such events for Baranja is quite obvious. The festivities are also visited by local, regional and national officials, and we could even see Croatian prime ministers in the town centre in recent years. In addition, the festival is regularly visited by more than 2,000 guests and tourists,” the town authorities said.

The competition is also accompanied by a traditional products fair and an international folklore festival, making it a real treat for numerous fans of gastronomy, culture and tradition.

The best cooks of the traditional Baranja specialty will be announced. However, the quality of “fiš” is not the only thing which will be assessed. The jury will select the most beautifully arranged table, the funniest team, the oldest and the youngest contestants, and the best homemade dough. The professional committee, which includes the masters of fish stew, will select the best cooks, who will then directly enter the national championship finals.

Of course, everything will be accompanied by great music and entertainment, provided by the Garavi tamburitza band and Maja Šuput.
