Hungry Bears in Gorski Kotar Decide to Help Themselves with Food

By 25 March 2016

Inhabitants of Ravna Gora get unexpected guests in their town.

The town of Ravna Gora in Croatia’s mountainous Gorski Kotar region is again having problems with bears who have decided to feed themselves in the town and represent quite a serious threat to public safety, especially for children, reports Novi List on March 25, 2016.

It is not clear what will happen with the bears, and that is the question that many people in the area have been asking themselves, including Dražen Vančina, a member of the Municipal Council, who raised the issue at the latest council session. The Municipal Mayor of Ravna Gora Anđelko Florijan answered that the problem had been reported to a local hunters’ society which had the authority and the right to intervene.

“As far as I am aware, they have reported the issue to the state institutions. Now, the procedure is for the competent authorities to make a decision what will happen next – whether the bears will be caught and released deeper in the woods, or where they will be put down to sleep”, said Florijan.

So, until the “competent authorities” make their decision, we can only hope that the hungry bears will limit themselves to food found in dumpsters and similar places, and will not turn towards the inhabitants of Gorski Kotar, which is enough sparsely populated as it is.
