Croatian Wedding Photo Among Best in the World

By 31 August 2018

A photo by Tomica Rašetina is one of the 50 best wedding photos in the world.

Every year, Junebug Weddings selects the most beautiful wedding photographs in the world. This year, among the 50 best photos, they selected a photo by Croatian photographer Tomica Rašetina, reports 24sata.hr on August 31, 2018.

The amazing photos were selected from over 5,000 photographs taken around the world as part of Junebug Weddings annual selection of the best photos. “In this destination category, the beauty of the location and how it describes the love of couples is essential. People love this category because they feel like they are on a mini-tour,” said Carrie Schwab, editor-in-chief of the Junebug Weddings website.

One of the selected photos was shot by Tomica Rašetina from Rijeka.

How did you create the selected photo?
The photo was an idea of the bride and the groom who saw one of my similar photographs. The initial idea was to shoot it on a hill above Rijeka. But when we came to the rail tracks when I saw the position of the sun, I said, that's it! When it all started, I started panicking that I would not manage to film them because the smoke was spreading too fast. I had just one to two seconds to make the photo because the smoke went too high and nothing would be visible in the photo.

Why did you decide to send this particular photo to the contest?
It seemed to me it had something unique. It looks as if everything will move as if the wedding dress is part of the smoke or the smoke is part of the wedding dress. It is a perfect moment and a technically perfectly framed photo. Although I like photos of emotion and spontaneity, this is something quite different, a perfectly directed moment that has been recognized by experts.

How important is this competition?
I believe that Junebug Weddings is the biggest prize in the area of wedding photography, together with Rangefinder Magazine, which annually publishes the 30 rising stars selection. These are the greatest acknowledgments in our profession.

How long have you been involved in photography?
I started shooting over 12 years ago, while about three years ago I started doing wedding photos. I was born in Zadar, but I live in Rijeka. For years, I photographed the nature, the sunsets, the sea, the woods, but then suddenly I started feeling that people and emotions were missing.

When I got a chance to photograph the first wedding, I used a camera bought the proper Croatian way, with funds borrowed from four friends. Standing with the bride and the groom, I was drowned by their emotions and love. Ten minutes later, I joined them with a beautiful landscape, and I knew I had found my calling.

I have two diplomas from the Faculty of Economics, but the photography is my real love. This recognition for my devoted work means emotionally a lot more than my two degrees put together.
