Pula Arena and Rome Colloseum Mixed Up in Promotional Materials

By 27 September 2018

The embarrassing mistake was made in materials promoting European Sports Week.

Promotional materials for the finals of the European Sports Week, which have been moved from Zagreb to the Pula Arena this year, have been printed with a huge photo of the Colosseum in Rome, reports Glas Istre on September 27, 2018.

At the initiative of the European Union, the finals of this year's European Sports Week, which were announced at a special press conference 20 days ago, will be moved from Zagreb to Pula. After a full week of programmes that will be held in various fitness centres, kindergartens, schools and companies, the final day of the event will feature free sports activities for citizens in the Pula Arena. A night-time training session there will start at 8 pm. The press conference was also held in the middle of the Pula Arena.

However, according to the government approved promotional materials, it is not quite clear in which amphitheatre the event will take place. The one featured in the materials does not really resemble the one in Pula. Not surprising, since it is actually a photo of the Colosseum in Rome.

Why did they not include the Pula Arena in the promotional materials, and why have they resorted instead to the Colosseum in Rome, since both amphitheatres are globally famous and it is hard to believe that there is anybody from Croatia who cannot distinguish them? That was a question sent to the organisers of the event, the Central State Office for Sports, which is led by famous Croatian skier Janica Kostelić.

“We are extremely sorry that this mistake has been made, but it is not our fault. All the visuals element were prepared by an independent designer who bought the photos on legal platforms. As you know, photos that are copyright-protected cannot be used. When he entered Shutterstock (internet service for purchasing photos), and typed in ‘Arena Pula’, the photo which was ultimately used appeared. It was selected because we wanted to have a night-time version of Arena,” said Marija Crnković, head of the Department of International Cooperation and EU Funds of the Central State Office for Sports.

She added that they did not really notice that it was the Colosseum in Rome and that it is likely that the author had put in the wrong keywords when he uploaded the photo.
