ZAGREB, October 14, 2018 - Croatians have defended the title as the world's best olive pickers after their team won the 2nd World Olive Picking Championship which took place in Postira on the southern Adriatic island of Brač from 11 to 14 October, the organisers said on Sunday.
The competition was organised by the local tourism board and the agricultural cooperative. "We are very pleased with the response because as many as eleven countries participated this year," the director of the Postira Tourism Board Ivana Jelinčić said.
She said that the purpose of the event was to promote olive growing, exchange experience and foster friendship with countries with a long olive growing tradition and those where olive growing is not so developed.
The competition involved teams of four from Bosnia and Herzegovina, France, Hungary, Montenegro, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Croatia.
The Croatian team picked 67 kg of olives in 45 minutes, 11 kg more than the second-placed Montenegrins whose crate weighed 56.6 kg. The Slovenians finished third with 51.6 kg.
