'Photomath' Croatian Mobile Application Downloaded Over 100 Million Times

By 6 November 2018

Scan. Solve. Learn. How much do you know about the Croatian mobile application Photomath?

Since it emerged on the app market four years ago, the Photomath mobile application has not descended from the top of the best educational apps. This success has been underlined with impressive numbers - tens of millions of active users per month, over 100 million downloads and a $6 million investment, reports 24 Sata on November 6, 2018.

PhotoMath is a free application that allows you to scan your math problems with your mobile phone, receive a solution - AND get a detailed description of the procedure.

Behind the PhotoMath story is Damir Sabol, a founder of Microblink who told Netocracy that the company received millions in their Series A investment, which will be used to further develop advanced math skills and expand and reinforce the team with math professors, machine learning experts, and top developers.

Although many were skeptical at first, considering the Photomath application was used as a 'cheat sheet', the focus of its development was to create a top-notch tool to help kids tackle math problems, explain the calculation process and reduce the nervousness many students experience when looking at a collection of tasks. Because the most important part of the application explains the step-by-step procedure for solving tasks, the application could completely replace paying for math instruction one day.

Sabol pointed out to Netocracy that they are improving the way problems are solved and their explanations of how they continue to work, and the investment will enable them to develop new methods of explanation, perhaps with animations or various types of tutorials. As Photomath is still completely free, Sabol says it is in the process of developing a premium version of the application, so by the end of the year, he is quite certain they will develop a method of monetization.

“Of course we cannot have a free app forever. We think that the basic free app is actually a really good thing and we want basic opportunities affordable all over the world, but at the same time we are intensely working to monetize advanced opportunities that will be extremely useful to those who decide to pay for them,” said Sabol.
