Split Advent: Free City Transport, Bakalar, and Fritule for Visitors

By 28 November 2018

After Zagreb's announcement of an even better Advent, Split Advent is not far behind.

The two bright stars of Croatian tourism have prepared vibrant Christmas and New Year events for the coming weeks, with a series of new charms compared to last year, reports Vecernji List on November 28, 2018.

Zagreb will, among other things, revive the spirit of Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić's fairytales, and Split, as announced on Tuesday at the press conference for journalists in Zagreb, will warm up the atmosphere for their visitors with bakalar, fritule, and other local specialties. The delights will be shared to visitors of Advent free of charge.

Split hosts are also significantly counting on the citizens of Zagreb to leave their beloved Advent for a day and visit them in Split. Recall, during Advent, Croatian Railways will reduce fares from all cities to Split by as much as 50 percent, meaning a return ticket by train to Split will only cost 100 kuna.

Croatia Airlines are even preparing discounts on flights from Zagreb to Split, and on the weekends, Split will take a note from Zagreb and provide their Advent guests with free city transport.

Who organizes a better Advent celebration, Split or Zagreb, remains to be seen, though Split has something that Zagreb doesn’t - the ability to enjoy Advent in sunglasses and short sleeves (maybe).

“Our Advent story is modest as we have a smaller budget than Zagreb, but we are not trying to overpower or duplicate it. We are partners, not competitors. Each city has its own specifics, and in Split this year we decided to turn to the customs, traditions and return Advent to the Split people themselves by becoming part of the Advent events and celebrations. The most important thing is that tourists come to Croatia, it is not important whether it is to Zagreb, Split or Dubrovnik. But most of all, as the data shows, many guests visit both the Zagreb and Split Advent,” says Alijana Vukšić, director of the Split Tourist Board.

Although almost every location in Croatia will mark the upcoming Advent events and Christmas fairs in the coming weeks, comparisons between Zagreb and Split are inevitable. And while Zagreb may be the best in Europe, we can’t say that Split doesn’t know how to create a great atmosphere - they will welcome Jasmin Stavros and Magazin for New Year's Eve, after all.
