By 13 December 2018

A look at the terms that saw the most action on Google in Croatia in 2018.

To no one’s surprise, the World Cup in Russia was the most frequently searched term in Croatia and the world this year. But what else caught the interest of Croatians in 2018? The famous search engine has announced their annual report on the most popular searches in 2018, reports Slobodna Dalmacija on December 13, 2018.

On top of the ten most commonly Googled terms in Croatia this year, five are related to football. While the World Cup in Russia comes in first place, in fifth is Dejan Lovren, sixth is Luka Modrić, ninth is Croatia - England, and in tenth is Croatia coach Zlatko Dalić.

Taking second place on the list of most Googled terms in Croatia is the Istanbul Convention, which saw a lot of controversy in Croatia this summer - and immediately behind it in third place is the Turkish series “Bride of Istanbul”, a soap opera that focuses on a powerful, wealthy, and traditional Muslim family living in Bursa just outside of Istanbul.

The fourth most commonly searched Google term is the late singer Oliver Dragojević, who also made first on the list of the most Googled people in Croatia this year.

Behind Oliver Dragojević, the most frequently searched people are members of the Croatia national football team, including Dejan Lovren, Luka Modrić, Zlatko Dalić, Ante Rebić, Domagoj Vida, Ivan Rakitić, Šime Vrsaljko, and Mario Mandžukić.

The only person who is not from Croatia on the list is Duchess Meghan Markle, wife of Prince Harry, who she married in May this year.

When looking at five of the most commonly searched films in Croatia, “Bohemian Rhapsody", a biographical film about the British rock group Queen and singer Freddy Mercury, comes in first. “Venom”, a superhero film based on a Marvel comic, follows in second, and "50 Shades Freed”, the final part of the "Fifty Shades" trilogy by British author Erika Leonard James, falls into the third. Two more films based on superheroes, "Black Panther" and "Deadpool 2”, come in fourth and fifth.

While the most searched TV series is the Turkish soap opera “Bride of Istanbul”, Turkish series “Hayat Sarkisi” is not far behind, and neither is Croatian telenovela "Na granici".

The World Cup, or "World Cup", was the most Googled term in the world this year. In the second place is the late Swedish DJ and music producer Avicii, who died in April 2018, while the third is American rapper Mac Miller, who died in September.
