When an American Couple Tests Menu at Popular Split Restaurant (VIDEO)

By 11 March 2019

March 11, 2019 - Only Food and Horses, a popular food vlog (video blog) out of Split, put two Americans to the test last month to see how much they knew about what's in some of the dishes at favorite restaurant Corto Maltese.

Meet John and Amber Hinger, an American couple who have fallen in love with Split.

“The pace of life is the biggest difference for me,” said John. “Everywhere else is go go go, and once we adjusted to it here, we really enjoyed it.”

“For me, the biggest difference was the morning and afternoon school. In America, you only start school in the morning,” said Amber.

The two raved about Split and said that while most people visit in the summer, the offseason is the time to be here

“Our favorite time in this city is during the offseason when its quiet and you get to enjoy the city for what it really is,” said John.

The couple rates the food in Split as incredible, though John claims he doesn’t really have a culinary bone in his body. They also especially enjoy how so much in the area is based around food, like how it isn't unusual for your neighbors to bring you over lemons or oranges in the winter.

“And look at this, its February and we’re sitting outside while the polar vortex is happening back home!”

Only Food and Horses put John and Amber to the test at Corto Maltese to see how much they knew about the dishes, er, ingredients, at all.

“We brought our American friends who live in Split to the restaurant and offered them three different dishes. We asked them to guess what is on their plate. See their reactions," they wrote.

The starters?

Amber had Amberjack confit and John rabbit pate.

“It looks amazing.”

“Looks like a pâté, maybe meatloaf.”

“I think it’s fish. I couldn’t tell you what kind.”

“Do you have liver?”

“I have no idea what any of this is. Maybe a meat paste?”

And for the entrees…

“Some sort of pastry type thing with some sort of meat.”

“I don’t know what it is but its fantastic!”

“I’m assuming its pork? No? Beef? It’s really tasty.”

“This isn’t burek, is it? Oh! It is!”

“It’s really good fish.”

“It’s veal!”

“This is a really meaty fish.”

And to end, a dessert of tiramisu and deconstructed cheesecake.

“Where do we begin? I feel like if I say brownie its offensive. Flourless cake?”

“Pudding? Mousse?”

“No idea what it is. Brownie with custard?”
