Falkensteiner Punta Skala Resort Scraps Single-Use Plastics

By 7 August 2019

Single-use plastics have been scrapped from the Falkensteiner Punta Skala Resort, who instead introduced cups, bottles, and straws made of biodegradable or reusable materials.

Environmental protection, wastewater treatment, waste reduction, and optimizing energy consumption are just some of the solutions at Falkensteiner Punta Skala that aim at environmental protection and sustainable development. Thus, this resort ranks at the very top of eco-conscious hotels, not only in Croatia but also in Europe, reports HRTurizam on August 6, 2019.

"From the very beginning, we worked to collect and separate certain types of recyclable waste (paper and cardboard packaging, PET packaging, wood, glass, and metal). Since 2019, this project has received even greater attention. A separate waste collection system was introduced, we reorganized the kitchens and restaurants, and the waste separation system was implemented at all levels and in all hotel departments,” said Falkensteiner, adding that management and staff education was also being done. Promotional leaflets have been created inviting guests to participate in this project and conscientiously separate their waste in rooms and apartments.

The next step is to procure an electric compost that would be used for bio-waste processing and so the resort could produce its own compost, which would then be used to maintain its green areas. There are also plans to procure more separate waste bins, and further investment in the existing recycling yard at the resort, where it would be the main collection area of all types of waste and its sorting and disposal.

The economical heating and cooling system in Punta Skala has reduced the need to use fossil fuels as seawater is pumped and used in the summer for cooling and the winter for heating. What further adds to this ecological oasis is that Punta Skala is a car-free zone. Therefore, there is an integrated underground garage so that cars do not have to sit in front of the hotel, pollute the environment, or interfere with happy holidayers.

The resort also has a wastewater treatment plant, which is treated through biological devices and stored with collected rainwater and rinsing water from bathrooms. Wastewater is used not only to flush the toilets but also to water the gardens, while a desalination plant desalinates a portion of seawater through an osmosis device which can then be used as drinking water. The rest is released back into the sea.
