"Zvizdan" to Be the Croatian Candidate for Academy Awards

"Zvizdan" (The High Sun), a film directed by Dalibor Matanić and produced by Kinorama, will represent Croatia at the 88th Academy Awards of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in the category for best film in a foreign language, reported the Croatian Society of Filmmakers, reports Jutarnji List on August 27, 2015.

Every year, the Croatian Society of Filmmakers selects a feature film that will represent Croatia in the contest for the Oscars. This year, seven films gave applied to be considered. The final decision has been made by a committee of 15 members of the Society, comprised of film professionals from all branches of filmmaking.

The commission had to choose between the seven entries, which were: "Beyond the Dream", directed by Igor Filipović; "Love or Death", directed by Daniel Kušan; "Reaper", directed by Zvonimir Jurić; "Those Are the Rules", directed by Ognjen Sviličić; "You Are Carrying Me", directed by Ivona Juka; and "Zagreb Cappucino", directed by Vanja Sviličić.

"Zvizdan" takes place in three different decades, in two neighbouring villages loaded with historical heritage, and follows three love stories about forbidden love. The stars of the film are Tihana Lazović and Goran Marković, while the rest of the cast are Nives Ivanković, Dado Ćosić, Stipe Radoja, Trpimir Jurkić, Mira Banjac, Slavko Sobin, Lukrecija Tudor, Tara Rosandić and Ksenija Marinković.

"Zvizdan" has won several film awards and nominations, including the award of the International Confederation of Art Cinemas CICAE at the Sarajevo Film Festival 2015, and the Golden Arena at this year's 62nd Pula Film Festival.
