Bite Art - an Artsy Treat

Designer Ana Šerić's works let you bite into gourmet pieces of Croatian art.

Bite art! is a message behind artist Ana Šerić’s brilliant and delicious project – edible artistic gingerbread cookies (paprenjaci) wrapped in an interactive package.

Each gingerbread cookie package has four reproductions of paintings made by famous Croatian painters, including classics such as Ivan Rabuzin and Vlaho Bukovac, but also contemporary artists such as Marko Tadić, Hrvoje Majer, Ana Kolega and OKO street artist.

Once you eat the cookies, you don’t throw away the package, but you can use it as a frame with miniature versions of paintings by the artists mentioned above.
Ana Šerić graduated New Media at Zagreb’s Academy of Fine Arts, and she works as a camera operator, mostly collaborating with Croatian Radiotelevision. Art makes her world go round, motivates her, and Ana and her friends always discuss it, and this is how she came up with Bite Art.

Edible art is Ana’s way of ironizing today’s art, with the main question being: What is art and who is it for?

“This has been cooking for a long time – I started with oversized Christmas cookies, such as a giant Isler cookie with a painting by Dalibor Martinis, which people really loved. If they liked the Isler cookie, it means that they have consummated art, so this is how I started playing around with food and art, two of my favourite things in the world. I wanted to bring them together and it resulted in Bite Art, which is actually an ironic product. I wanted to provoke a reaction, make people think twice about whether they were going to bite into it or not – I wanted to see if they would dare eat a Bukovac,” Ana explains.

“It is also an advertisement for our gastronomic culture and tradition, and, most importantly, an attempt to bring Croatian art closer to the public, especially art made by contemporary artists,” Ana says.
“I try to create edible reactions to new artists’ works in order to present them because they truly create wonderful things. It inspired me to start creating something for a wider audience, and that’s the story about how Bite Art was made. You eat a cookie, but you are left with art,” Ana concludes.
