Split Student Devises Instrument to Measure Sea Wave Pressure

More Croatian innovation, this time directly from a student in the Dalmatian capital.

As Morski writes on the 6th of April, 2018, until today, there has been no device that directly measures the power of the sea's waves, rather, the idea of its force is obtained by combining a variety of other parameters, such as its height and overall velocity.

At first sight, Branimir Jurun would likely strike you as a regular student in Split, but this innovative young mind, in his four long years of research and study, has designed an innovative, unique instrument for the measuring of the pressure of waves.

His university has rightly recognised and taken his remarkable idea on board, and has been a fundamental help in the development of the impressive new tool. In the last three bids for student projects, the university has funded the prototype, the construction and the final development of the new instrument. With the huge support of his colleagues, the instrument was created and several sea wave measurements were made using it, Dalmacija Danas writes.

The instrument serves to directly measure the wave, meaning that it measures the force of a wave at a predefined surface.

Armed with the data on measuring the pressure of the waves of the sea, Jurun wrote an academic paper, and was subsequently invited to the World Water Technology Conference, held under the auspices of the World Academy of Science, Engineering and Technology (WASET) back in April 2017 in Zurich, Switzerland. Since then, the instrument has been perfected in the direction of quality, as well as with regard to the proper presentation of other spatial data. The instrument has also undergone a number of tests and thus the quality of wave pressure data has risen. In addition, an anemometer (wind speed sensor) has been installed above the instrument.

With such a quality combination of sensors, at the same time and in the same area, this incredible instrument is able to measure the pressure of sea waves, and the speed of the wind at once. Several successful measurements have been made with the ''enhanced'' version of the clever instrument, confirming its extensive capabilities.

On March the 22nd, 2018, the talented Jurun participated at a world conference for the second time, this time in regard to the topic "International Conference on Physical and Dynamic Oceanography".

In the near future, the instrument will be able to be used for the purpose of scientific research in the area of physical oceanography. In the same sense, it will also be able to be used in coastal and marine installations for the purpose of safety during strong wave action. Because of the use of a high quality electronic system, it's possible to create a mobile application (app), and as such synchronise a personal mobile device with the instrument.
