Lamb from Lika is the 20th Croatian product to be protected by the EU.
Namely, 'Lika lamb' comes from the meat of lambs from the native Croatian breed ‘Lika pramenka”. To produce Lika lamb, the lambs are slaughtered at 90-160 days at a body mass of 22 to 36 kg, reports HRTurizam on October 31, 2018.
Lika lambs are cultivated in the geographical area of Lika, which is mostly located in Lika-Senj County and, to a lesser extent, in Zadar County. The area specifically includes the town of Gospić and the municipalities of Donji Lapac, Karlobag, Lovinac, Perušić, Plitvice Lakes, Udbina, Vrhovine, Senj, Brinje, Otočac, and Gračac.
Lika pramenka is a native Croatian breed with strong resistance, solid structure, and strong constitution, and resides in mountainous areas of Lika. They are cultivated in a traditional manner - spending most of their days in the pasture, and most of their nights housed in dwellings.

“The European Union's gastro map has received another delicacy, and our Lika lamb has a European passport. With 20 protected Croatian products, we have 7 more products in the protection process at the EU level, and the number of requests for national protection is constantly increasing. The interest by manufacturers to protect their products shows an awareness of the importance of marketing domestic products. Apart from the proven origin and top quality, there is even more added value, better competitiveness and market visibility for our producers,” said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Tomislav Tolušić.
Lika lambs join 19 other Croatian products protected by the EU
Like lamb now joins the 19 other protected Croatian products, including prosciutto from Krk, Istria, Drniš, and Dalmatia, extra virgin olive oil from Cres, Krk, Korčula, Šolta, mandarins from Neretva, sour cabbage from Ogulin, kulen from Baranja, potatoes from Lika, Poljički soparnik, turkey from Zagora, lamb from Pag, cabbage from Varazdin, kulen from Slavonia, honey from Slavonia, and meat from Međimurje.
