One of the world’s oldest art festivals goes on. The Dubrovnik Summer Festival is opening its 68th season this month.
It might not be needed, but let’s just mention how Dubrovnik is not only a unique city museum where a visitor has nothing to do but eat after having done the obligatory walk along and around the City Walls.
Arts in Dubrovnik are as old as the city itself, one may say. For example, the Museum of the Franciscan Monastery is in custody of a music sheet from 1106. AD. Dubrovnik has always been a stage. When peace regained its command over the world after WWII, arts began regaining their proper place in the society, and the festivals soon started springing up like mushrooms all over Europe. Among the first in the multitude, was the one in Dubrovnik. Enacted by a handful of enthusiasts in what must have been a lazy, boring summer, just several local theatre productions and some concerts staged in some open air locations, laid the fundaments to what today is Croatia’s most important cultural event.
With that, it must be noted that this Festival is considered pioneer in the so-called ‘ambiental theatre’. For the sixty-eighth consecutive time, and over the traditional 46 days of duration, there are so many things to make your evenings complete. Some 2000 artists will share their artistry on 15 different stages in theOld City. There is lots of wonderful music, theatre, ballet and film, for any taste, indeed. Just to mention the majestic Carmina burana or The Swan Lake, among others.
The 68th Festival will open, by tradition, on the 10th of July, 2017 with a specially designed Opening Ceremony in the main square of the city followed by huge fireworks from the sea in front of the Od City. A unique experience and occasion to take some truly memorable pictures!
