A Close Call: Fire Extinguished in Vela Luka

By 3 August 2017

A close call for Vela Luka as a potentially horrendous fire close to a hotel is brought under control and extinguished.

As Dubrovački Dnevnik reported on the 3rd of August, 2017, last night at 20:38, fire services received a call letting them know that a wildfire in an open space had broken out close to Hotel Adria in Vela Luka, on the island of Korčula.

All necessary steps were taken to bring the fierce blaze under control and 20 firefighters with 4 vehicles arrived at the scene quickly. The fire was localised and extinguished at 21:20 after it had managed to burn a forest area of 1000m2. No other damages, material or otherwise have been reported.

This, the latest in a frequent series of fires which have been leaving absolute devastation in their wake all along the Dalmatian coast, had the potential to become just as out of control as the ones we have unfortunately witnessed in recent weeks, thanks to the speed and expertise of local firefighters, the Vela Luka fire was stopped before it could damage any nearby hotels.
