Missing German Tourist Found on Kornati Islands

By 22 August 2017

A 49-year-old German tourist, whose disappearance was reported on Murter on August 20, was found on the island of Smokvica Vela on the Kornati islands, reports ŠibenikIn on August 21, 2017

His wife reported his disappearance to the emergency services. on August 20 around 8.30 P.M. The German tourist had sailed off on a 4.5-metre long dinghy and had not returned to Slanica Camp on Murter where he and his wife were accommodated.

The Port Authority Šibenik responded to the emergency call and, from early Monday morning, sent their vessels to search the island of Prišnjak and other islands near Murter, including the somewhat remote island of Tetovo. They continued their search towards the Kornati, following the bura wind which blew on the night of the disappearance and reaching Smokvica Vela island, where they finally found the missing German.

Seeing that his engine failed, the German was at mercy of winds, waves and sea currents - he floated aimlessly until he somehow got hold of land at Smokvica Vela, where he spent the whole night. The dinghy, found on the rocky shores, was all torn apart. According to the Port Authority, the German floated by holding onto some kind of board until he reached Smokvica Vela.

As soon as the Port Authority found him, the Emergency team immediately took care of him. The lost tourist was cold and in a state of shock, but otherwise did not sustain any serious injuries. He will be returning to Germany alive and healthy, with a handful of anecdotes from the vacation.
