EasyJet Flight to Split Forced to Abandon Landing Due to Freak Hail Storm

By 18 September 2017

Yesterday's freak hail storm toted more problems than we thought.

If you were in Split yesterday morning, there is a 99.9% chance that you witnessed one of the more bizarre weather events the city has experienced in recent months.

While we’ve been begging the rain gods for something, anything, after months of heat and more than a few prank calls by the storm clouds, yesterday morning we got just that.

Just before 11:00, obscene amounts of rain fell from the sky, the wind hurled, the storm thundered, and lightning struck. But then, for the climax of the event, we received freakishly large drops of hail that could only be compared to translucent, and wet, golf balls. You can read our full story here

Break Time Nautical

It was reported that the hail was so large it dented the hoods of cars and even broke a few windows, so you can imagine what it would feel like in the thick of it all on a flight attempting to land at Split Airport the minute the storm burst forth.

Such is the story of an EasyJet flight from Glasgow to Split yesterday morning that was forced to abandon its landing and divert to Ljubljana while it waited for the freak storm to pass in Split, reports Glasgowlive.co.uk on September 18, 2017.

A passenger on the flight, Milan Nikolic, recalls the crisis to Glasgow Live and the Daily Record:

“The flight had gone smoothly and we were getting ready to land when it became clear the weather was getting pretty bad. The plane was being thrown around and we got a message over the tannoy saying that owing to technical difficulties, we would be redirecting to Ljubljana. That probably made people feel even more nervous, as I thought there might be something wrong with the plane.

We started heading up quite sharply and people were screaming. The girl in front of me was sick and the woman behind me was screaming in panic. It was stressful.

It was pretty scary to be honest. We got through the turbulence and safely landed in Split and the captain emerged from the cockpit area and spoke to everyone, explaining that the freak weather had made it too dangerous to land. This was genuinely freak weather.”

EasyJet also confirmed that flight EZY6812 was diverted to Ljubljana due to “adverse weather”, and that the safety of their passengers and crew is their highest priority.

We are happy to know the flight did eventually land safely in Split!
