The wider Trogir area was hit by a thunderstorm around 11:30 today, September 19.
The storm clouds arrived from the southwest, resulting in a serious thunderstorm with a large precipitation amount. Apart from rain, the area was hit by hail measuring up to 2cm in diametre. The heavy rain caused multiple flash floods in the city, reports Dalmacija danas on September 19, 2017.
Čiovo experienced even worse issues – a tornado formed in the area of Okrug and inflicted serious damage to property. Firefighters of the Volunteer Fire Department Okruk were called into the field to intervene on multiple sites, as the tornado tore down numerous trees and electric pylons that crushed some of the vehicles parked around town.
"The affected area streches from camp Rožac to Donji Okrug; the tornado also passed through Duga. We've had seven interventions, four of them removals of trees from the county roads, and a bit more complex one in camp Rožac. In my opinion, that's where the tornado formed. There's no major damage, but there are a lot of trees destroyed. It's a stroke of luck that most trees fell between trailers. The tornado tore the roofs off of two trailers. A bit outside the camp, an electric pole fell right in front of a family home; the man is currently unable to leave his house. We turned out the power and are about to remove the pole", said Marin Radić, commander of the Fire Department Okruk.
The tornado then moved to Trogir, where it damaged the local shipyard, tearing off the roof of the shipyard warehouse which crushed multiple cars parked nearby. It's not yet sure if any people were injured during the storm.
The heavy rain still hasn't ceased in many parts of the country, especially along the Adriatic. Meteorologists predict it might lead to more flash floods.
