Day After the Catastrophe: One-Fifth of Ogulin Flooded (VIDEO)

By 19 September 2017

Due to heavy rainfall, the river Dobra overflowed its banks, flooding one-fifth of the town of Ogulin and damaging homes, roads and infrastructure.

Thousands of buildings and around 480 homes in Ogulin have been flooded as river Dobra burst its banks due to heavy rain, that has been pouring over the weekend, reports Jutarnji.hr on September 18, 2017.

On Monday, activities of protecting and sanctioning damages at places where the water has withdrawn have been carrying out throughout the day. Fortunately, the floodwaters have subsided for the most part of the town, reports Ogportal.com. Traffic has been normalized on Bolnica Street, while the D42 road, below the Frankopan Castle, is still closed for traffic.

Out of 1,000 buildings affected by the flood, around 480 of them are households. Some of them have been completely flooded, and some have, thankfully, saw only a few inches of water. The surface area affected by the flood is about 163 ha or 1.63 km², which is between 17 and 20% of the area of the narrow part of the city.

The Crisis Staff met this morning [Monday] at seven o'clock where, among other things, they discussed the needed drying equipment for areas where the water has receded. Also, it was noticed that a large proportion of citizens do not place the sandbags properly, which is why the military with cooperation with GSS has offered help with that.

The Prime Minister Andrej Plenković visited the flooded sites on Sunday, attended the session of the Civil Protection Directorate and thanked all those who are helping in recovering the flooded area: Karlovac County, Ogulin City, Firefighters, HGSS, Red Cross, National Protection and Rescue Directorate, Police and others, and also added that the key solution [for the floods affecting this area] is the construction of water-retention facilities at Hreljin.
