The Prime Minister is touring the area.
As expected, the sudden melting of the snow has caused a rapid rise in river levels. The most critical situation is in Karlovac and Hrvatska Kostajnica, as well as in Letovanić, south of Zagreb, reports Vijesti.hr on March 13, 2018.
The level of the Korana river in Karlovac passed 780 centimetres at 08:00, which means that a state of emergency is now in effect. However, the increase in the water level has slowed down by one to three centimetres an hour.
The level of the Kupa river is at the level of requiring extraordinary protection measures, while the area of Hrvatska Kostajnica is still under a state of emergency. In Kostajnica, water has entered some of the houses along the river bank, and the water levels are still rising.
A couple of houses have been cut off, and the most significant problem is currently near the hotel where the water will soon cross the road and cut the town into two halves. People will have to use boats to pass from one part of the town to another. Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Damir Krstičević and Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces General Mirko Šundov are attending a meeting of the Sisak-Moslavina County Civil Protection emergency committee. They have been joined by Prime Minister Andrej Plenković who is touring the area.
There are no flooded houses in Letovanić, but about a dozen have been cut off and can only be reached by boats. The peak water level will be reached during the day, but no houses are expected to be flooded there. Still, about 50 soldiers are currently constructing emergency levies around the most endangered houses in the Letovanić area.
The most threatened villages in the Karlovac area were visited by Prime Minister Andrej Plenković on Monday evening. He said he came to help the local population and congratulate all those who had helped to stop the flooding.
