Did You Know That Pirovac Was Called Zloselo (Evil Village) Until 1930?

July the 11th, 2022 - Croatian history is turbulent, often violent, and is as rugged as the landscape itself. But wars, changes of state and changes of often rather brutal regime aside, it's also absolutely full of strange little stories like this one. Did you know that Pirovac was called Zloselo (which literally translates to evil village) until 1930? As Morski/Ivo Glavas writes, When looking at how Pirovac was once referred to back in April 1930, you might find yourself raising an eyebrow or two... "As is known, recently, at the request of the village of Zloselo in the Municipality…

RokOtok 2022: A Father's Love, Swimming to Over 50 Inhabited Croatian Islands

July 10, 2022 - One of the most beautiful tributes I have ever come across enters its third and final year, as RokOtok 2022 attempts to connect 50 inhabited Croatian islands by a loving father in a unique tribute for his son. I have met many incredible people during my time in Croatia, and we have reported on a number of incredible projects. And sometimes - just sometimes - those incredible people can be found executing incredible projects. And then you have something truly special.  I first came across Domagoj Jakopovic, aka 'Ribafish' several years ago. As one of the…

20 Ways Croatia Changed Me in 20 Years: 2. Olives

July 10, 2022 - Twenty years a foreigner in Croatia. Part 2 of 20 Ways Croatia Changed Me in 20 Years, and where would life here be without olives? Back in 2002, my relationship with olives extended little further than knowledge of the phrase 'to extend an olive branch' and eating the token olive in the centre of a takeaway pizza. Olive oil was just something I never came across, and if I had consumed more than half a litre in the first 33 years of my life, I would be surprised.  All that changed with the fateful (and excellent)…

20 Ways Croatia Changed Me in 20 Years: 1. Business and Dalmatia

July 9, 2022 - Next month sees 20 years since I came to Croatia to buy a house on an island I still can't pronounce. To celebrate all that Croatia has given me, a new TCN series, 20 Ways Croatia Changed Me in 20 Years, starting with business and Dalmatia.  In August 2002, I set off with friends from Sarajevo to the Dalmatian coast for a long weekend to look for a holiday home on the Croatian island of Hvar, a place I had never heard of until 24 hours previously, and about which I knew nothing. Having sold my…

Croatian Snakes - How to Avoid Contact and What to Do If You're Bitten

July the 8th, 2022 - Croatian snakes, much like any other snake, prefer to stay as far away from human activity as possible and truly want absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with you. Croatian snakes are not outwardly aggressive, they do not seek confrontation, and contrary to popular (and unfortunate) belief, they do not bite out of ill will. If cornered, surprised or in fear, they can and will take a swipe at you. If you see a snake, especially a horned viper, make sure to give it a wide berth and show it some respect. You'll likely get the…
