Nenad Bakic in FT List of Europe's 100 Digital Champions

November 21, 2018. Some well-deserved international recognition for leading Croatian entrepreneur Nenad Bakic for his efforts to improve education and opportunity in Croatia. It is always nice to see international recognition from some of the world's most respected media, where Croatian excellence and initiative ranks among its peers on the world stage.  One of Croatia's most active entrepreneurs, who divides his time between running several successful enterprises and trying to improve accessibility and options in the way computers and technology are taught in Croatian schools in this digital age, has been recognised for his considerable efforts in this year's list…

Meet Stablo Znanja, the Tree of Knowledge Startup for Croatian Students

November 20, 2018 - Another great initiative for the future generations of Croatia - meet Stablo Znanja, the Tree of Knowledge.   I joined the TCN news team at launch, and I have been far too slack in contributing very much this year - my life got in the way - my kids, and indeed my own blog, but I really could not think of a better story to dust of my TCN login and get tapping on the keyboard again.   Let me introduce you to Stablo Znanja - or the Tree of Knowledge in English. It's an innovative new…

British Master of Wine Jo Ahearne Exports to Japan from Hvar

November 20, 2018 - Jo Ahearne is the first Master of Wine to make wine in Croatia, and now her indigenous Hvar wines are en route to Japan. I don't even dare ask how she did it. Croatian bureaucracy has featured a lot on TCN in recent weeks, as we have been highlighting some of the absurdities of life here, as well as issues foreigners are experiencing trying to get residence permits. But every once in a while, there is a heartwarming tale of success against all the odds, and this one is really worth celebrating.  I first met Jo…

Meet Belma Gutlić, RioBot CEO and G2.4 Startup Winner in Zagreb

November 17, 2018 - Continuing our look at the exciting world of Croatian IT startups, meet Belma Gutlić, CEO of RioBot which earlier this week won an award for the best startup at the G2.4 diaspora conference in Zagreb.   One of the things I have appreciated most about moving from Hvar to Varazdin is my proximity to Zagreb. Don't get me wrong, Hvar is a wonderful place to live but not the most practical choice of base if most of your face to face business is in Zagreb. Moving closer to Zagreb has opened up a new and very stimulating world…

Swiss Silk as Korcula Business Expands to Verbier

November 15, 2018 - There cannot be many businesses which start on Dalmatian islands like Korcula, then expand to exclusive locations like Verbier in Switzerland.  Marco Polo may have been born on Korcula and gone travelling to exotic places, but he is not the only one to have moved from that gorgeous Dalmatian island with a tale of spice.  Another Silk Road is slowly being constructed, this time starting in Korcula Town, as the popular Asian street food restaurant, Silk, is set to open its third location, this time in exotic Verbier in Switzerland.  Silk, which takes its name from…

UNHCR on How Croatian Bureaucracy is Rendering Some People Stateless

November 14, 2018 - While some foreigners may be having issues with Croatian bureaucracy getting residence permits, UNHCR has highlighted two cases where it has made people stateless. We have featured several frustrated stories in the unwinnable battle with Croatian bureaucracy in recent weeks, particularly with regard to foreigners who are having difficulty getting residence permits, but a recent UNHCR article focuses on two cases where the failings of Croatian bureaucracy actually rendered two men stateless, despite the fact they have lived and worked in Croatia for decades.  Boro Topolic, 63, came to Croatia from Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1975,…
