Unique Product from Bjelovar Attracts International Interest

Bjelovar breaks the mold and creates a unique fitness product that has caught the eye of not only the nearby Hungarians, but the world. Continental Croatia is, aside from its tourism potential, usually in the news for all the wrong reasons. Although it has gradually started to spread, the Croatian demographic crisis has bitten harder in that area of the country than it has elsewhere, and with residents leaving in their droves, it often comes as a pleasant surprise to read about innovatation and opportunities arising from there, despite the fact that there are several. As Goran Jungvirth/Poslovni Dnevnik writes…

The Story Behind Croatia's Award-Winning World Cup Promo Video by BBDO

February 20, 2019 - It was the World Cup promotional video whose success mirrored Croatia's heroics on the pitch. TCN finds the story behind the video with BBDO managing director, Luka Dubokovic.  It was a football tournament which brought unprecedented interest in Croatia, as millions around the world willed on Croatia's heroes in last summer's World Cup. Meet First-Time Croatian Chick Lit Author Sanja Srdić Jungić

February 19, 2019 - Getting published as a first-time author these days is tough. Doing so in Croatia with a genre that barely exists among Croatian writers is tougher still. Meet a young lady who succeeded - Sanja Srdić Jungić. The last time I met Sanja Srdić Jungić was a couple of months ago. As marketing manager for popular and innovative book store, Hoću Knjigu, Sanja had kindly agreed to help me look for a publisher for my next book, Around the World in 80 Disasters. We haven't met since, but it turns out she has been hiding a little secret of her…

From Melbourne to Kyoto, Hvar Grapes on Tour with British Master of Wine

February 15, 2019 - A British Master of Wine, some grapes from Hvar, and wine-drinking audiences in Japan and Australia.  It is one of my favourite Croatian wine stories, and one which is truly going international.  Croatia, of course, has already made several significant contributions to the international wine story. The original Zinfandel comes from Kastela, just outside Split, the contribution of Miljenko 'Mike' Grgic in California is much talked about since the famous Judgment of Paris in 1976, and the rise of the New Zealand wine story owes a debt to Sir George Fistonish, whose family hailed from Hvar.  And…

They left their former jobs, took out all the savings and started their business. This is the beginning of the story about D3Stooges3D, a small printing studio hidden on the ground floor of one of the buildings in Novi Zagreb, where four friends print everything customers ask them, from animal figures and characters from movies and video games to cups, pods, soap holders, earrings. And they are doing great, reports Večernji List on February 13, 2019. “It started four years ago when our father put together a 3D printer because he wanted to work on aeroplanes models,” said the brothers…

TasteAtlas Named Resource of Week by Irish Education Ministry

February 7, 2019 - Another day, another international mention for local food map TasteAtlas, as the Irish Education Ministry makes the site its Resource of the Week. It is almost a year since I interviewed Matija Babic, the Croatian founder of a rather unique new food website, TasteAtlas.  Unlike most global food sites, TasteAtlas focuses very much on the local dishes to be found in a country, and not on the most popular restaurants which often offer bland international fare.  Three years in the making, the interactive maps of more than 5,000 local dishes, accompanied by expert recommendations on where to…

In the world of chocolate there used to be white, milk and dark chocolate, but in 2017 a new kind of chocolate first appeared. That is the ruby chocolate, which is currently available in just a few countries, and one of them will soon be Croatia, reports Poslovni.hr on February 6, 2019. “We are among the countries which always follow trends in chocolates, which also confirms our credibility as a Mediterranean country that is quite diverse in flavours,” says Fran Reizl, the creative director and production manager at Vrsna from Sesvete. He has been involved in the food production business…

Zagreb Man Invents System to Prevent Needless Food Wastage

As Bojana Mrvos Pavic/Novi List writes on the 2nd of February, 2019, Zagreb's VeeMee connects customers and manufacturers over a platform where, by scanning a QR code on a product, the buyer can see all the information about the producer that interests them - who he is, how many hectares he is working on to produce his own food. That is, the customer can see whether or not what they're holding in their hands is truly authentic. He may only be 31 years old, but he has many more good business ideas that, without exaggeration, could save the world -…
