Zagreb in 1930: a Video Tour of the Croatian Capital 90 Years Ago

February 9, 2021 - A delightful journey into the past with a wonderful tour of the Croatian capital as it once was - meet Zagreb in 1930. One of the most engaging tours I have been on in recent years was a historic tour and quest of the upper town of Zagreb by Iva Silla of Secret Zagreb. From the moment we met, she was in character as the Black Queen, who wakes up from her slumber once every 100 years. She took us up the funicular to the upper town, wondering how things had changed, as there used to…

February 8, 2021 - Mayor Mato Franković has announced a plan to save the tourist season in Dubrovnik this summer. Jutarnji List reports that given the efforts made by the United Kingdom and the United States to vaccinate their populations, it should come as no surprise that European tourism-dependent countries were among the first to dive into precisely those markets, believing they could logically be among the first to send travelers. Zagreb County as It Once Was: Celebrating Patron Saints in 1930 (VIDEO)

February 8, 2021 - Traditions are very important in Croatia; some delightful footage of village life in Zagreb County in 1930 celebrating the feast day of the local patron saint.  When it comes to upholding traditions, I have never come across anywhere as diverse as Croatia.  It took me a while to realise, but seemingly every village has its own traditions, its own patron saint, and even many have their own traditional costume.  The celebration of the patron saint of the village is an eagerly-anticipated affair, and I always found it heartwarming to see these celebrations taking place in each…

The Mediterranean as It Once Was: Zadar in 1975 (VIDEO)

February 7, 2021 - Some things change, some things stay the same. A video recollection of Zadar in 1975. 'The Mediterranean as It Once Was' was the tourism slogan for many years, and it helped rebuilding the tourism industry after the Homeland War in the 1990s. Before the war, former Yugoslavia (essentially the Croatian Adriatic coast) was the second most popular destination for British tourists after Spain, with some 440,000 tourists annually. Yugo Tours and Yugoslavia were well-known brands, but it took time for Croatia to establish its own tourism brand, something it has managed to do with great success. …
