Šibenik Prefect Condemns Accusations that Serbs Are Starting Fires in Croatia

By 23 August 2017

An important voice of reason from Šibenik.

In recent days, after numerous fires in Šibenik-Knin County, many people have commented on social networks that the fires were being intentionally started by Serbs from Croatia and Serbia, although the investigation is still ongoing and there is no proof that is actually the case. On Wednesday, Prefect of Šibenik-Knin County Goran Pauk condemned such unfounded and xenophobic allegations, reports tportal.hr on August 23, 2017.

“I went out to my balcony with a cigarette yesterday, and I saw that my balcony was full of ash. First I thought that was the ash from my cigarette, but then I realised that the wind has brought burned pieces of our county to my balcony, and to the whole town. It seemed as if it wanted to tell us: it is not over yet. Maybe it is not over, but these fires will not destroy us,” wrote Pauk on his Facebook's profile.

He also commented on negative comments directed against members of the Serbian minority.

“It seems that these fires, in a good part of our people, by reading the comments on the social networks, have created an entirely negative euphoria against members of the Serbian national minority in our county, which is downright bad, wrong, and unfounded. I can understand the emotions of the people, but it must not lead us to the madness of the other kind. On the other hand, just a few days ago, for the first time in my life, I went to an Orthodox liturgical service for the Orthodox Feast of Jesus' Transfiguration at the Krka Monastery. After watching and listening to the service, it was evident to me: the same words, the same meanings, the same prayers, the same God and Jesus. The same Christians. We burn and extinguish fires in the same state of Croatia. Together,” wrote Pauk.
