President Grabar-Kitarović Named World’s 39th Most Powerful Woman

By 2 November 2017

The list of the world’s most powerful women was published by Forbes magazine.

US magazine Forbes regularly publishes a list of the most powerful women in the world, and this year’s edition again features the Croatian President, reports N1 on November 2, 2017.

According to Forbes, Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović is the 39th most powerful woman in the world. German Chancellor Angela Merkel leads the list, followed by British Prime Minister Theresa May.

Grabar-Kitarović is the 39th in the overall list, and the 14th when it comes to female politicians. According to Forbes, she is more powerful than Norwegian Prime Minister Erne Solberg, who is 17th, or Elvira Nabiulina, the governor of the Russian central bank.

“As the youngest ever President of Croatia and also the first woman in that position, Grabar Kitarović continued to strengthen her position on the international scene this year, working together with US President Donald Trump and the United States to build an American facility for import of liquefied natural gas on the island of Krk, which could deliver up to two billion cubic metres of gas per year for distribution to Western Europe, and help decrease Europe's energy dependence on Russia. The former Foreign Minister and Ambassador to the United States last year visited Iranian President to talk about the strengthening of diplomatic relations,” wrote Forbes in the explanation.

Last year, the President was in the 46th position.

“My opinion about surveys and polls is known: I always say that the most important is the voice of the people. But, I have to admit that it is nice to see that experts in international politics and economy recognise my efforts. Nevertheless, I remain to stand firmly with both feet on the ground. I have repeatedly said that I do not see myself solely as a woman politician, but as a politician who represents the interests of her country. I am glad that the efforts are being recognised and respects by the international community,” said the President in a statement issued by her office.
