Tesla is first and foremost a European innovator, claims MEP Ivan Jakovčić
MEP Ivan Jakovčić sent a letter to President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker on Wednesday, asking for one of the European programmes or institutes to be named after Nikola Tesla, reports Glas Istre on December 6, 2017.
"It's a great wish of mine for Nikola Tesla to get recognition from European institutions. Naturally, he's well-known as it is, but he isn't recognised enough yet, which is why I want the European Commission to accept our proposal for one of the European programmes or the European Institute of Innovation and Technology to get named after Nikola Tesla", Jakovčić stated.
On Wednesday, December 6, he hosted a presentation of a special edition of Večernji list dedicated to Tesla at the European Parliament in Brussels. Titled 'Tesla - the man who invented the 20th century', the edition has a 130-page count and is dedicated to the life and work of the renowned genius.
"The goal of this conference is to raise awareness [of Tesla's work] not only at the institutional level, but among the wider European public as well. Tesla is first and foremost a European innovator, no matter how successful a career he has built in the United States. I believe Juncker will give some serious thought to Tesla getting his deserved place among European programmes and institutions, once he has received my letter", Jakovčić said.
The conference on the importance of Tesla's legacy saw speeches of Vice President of the European Parliament Pavel Telička, Croatian State Secretary for science Tome Antičić, director of the Institute for Biochemistry at the Goethe University in Frankfurt Ivan Đikić, and the deputy editor in chief of Večernji list Mislav Šimatović.
