Opposition Launches No Confidence Procedure Against Deputy Prime Minister

By 28 February 2018

After a heated discussion, the opposition parties have agreed to vote unanimously for the dismissal of the minister.

Following a proposal by MOST’s parliamentary caucus, opposition parties and independent MPs held a meeting today about the initiative to launch a no-confidence procedure against Deputy Prime Minister and Economy Minister Martina Dalić. After the meeting, MOST’s political secretary Nikola Grmoja said that the proposal to dismiss Dalić was no longer just MOST’s initiative, but a project led by all opposition parties, reports tportal.hr on February 28, 2018.

“We have agreed to launch an initiative for the dismissal of Minister Dalić. This has been agreed to by the entire opposition,” said Grmoja, who is also one of MOST’s MPs. He added that the opposition would easily collect enough signatures (31 MPs) to initiate the procedure and would have the signatures ready by Monday at the latest.

By Friday, the opposition parties will agree on an exact wording on the request for dismissal of the deputy prime minister.

Grmoja added that MPs from liberal parties IDS and GLAS have agreed that they would not condition their support for the dismissal with MOST’s support for the ratification of the Istanbul Convention on prevention of violence against women, which has become a controversial issue in recent months. Before today's meeting of opposition parties, IDS and GLAS said they would give their consent to launch the dismissal procedure against Dalić only if all opposition parties, including more conservative MOST, were to agree to support the ratification of the Istanbul Convention.

At the today’s meeting, MP Vlaho Orepić, a former member of MOST and former interior minister, left several minutes after the scheduled start of the meeting, saying that the delay showed how serious the proposal was. He left the conference room, although the delay was just five minutes. “The policy which talks about problems but does not offer any solutions is not a real policy,” said Orepić to reporters, reiterating that the delay showed the unserious attitude of opposition parties.

HSS president Krešo Beljak also attended the meeting and promised that all five HSS MPs would be present to vote for the dismissal, unlike in some previous occasions when they mysteriously did not appear to vote for no-confidence motions against other ministers.

“We believe that, following controversial events related to the Agrokor administration, Economy Minister Martina Dalić can no longer perform her duties. We hope that you will come to the meeting. We consider that this issue goes beyond party politics and that anyone who wants good to the state should agree with the need to dismiss Minister Dalić from the government,” wrote MOST in their invitation sent to the opposition parties several days ago.
