Šibenik Klapa Impresses European Parliament

By 27 March 2018

Brussels gets to hear the sounds of Šibenik.

As we reported yesterday, the traditional Dalmatian singing has drawn the interest of many today in the European Parliament, where the all-female klapa group "Gimnazijalke" from the Dalmatian town of Šibenik sang two traditional Croatian songs in the Belgian capital and at the very seat of the European Union.

The members of the group are part of the group of pupils from the Šibenik high school Antun Vrančić who are staying in Brussels this week at the joint invitation of Croatian MEPs Tonino Picula and Ivana Maletić.

"These active young people brought the sound of Šibenik and the taste of Croatian tradition into the European parliament! I'm delighted to have been able to host them, not just as a Šibenik native myself, but because of these award-winning students. Their high school, Antun Vrančić, is a School Ambassador Of the European Parliament - an educational program that I strongly support because it aims to raise awareness and the level of knowledge of high school students about the European Union and parliamentary democracy. It brings them closer to the work of European institutions, but also shows them that they themselves can actively participate in the creation of European politics,'' Tonino Picula stated following their performance.

Namely, Antun Vrančić high school from Šibenik is one of 25 schools from all over Croatia part of it project "School Ambassador of the European Parliament" in the school (academic) year for 2017/2018.

The EPAS (European Parliament Ambassador School) program aims to enable young people - citizens of the European Union - to better understand their rights and to introduce them to the work and the responsibilities of the European Parliament.

These Šibenik students will spend four days in Brussels order to become better acquainted the functioning of the European Parliament, but also to get to know Brussels, the seat of the European Union, better as well.
