Is Slovenia Getting 2/3 of the Piran Bay?

By 22 July 2015

Vesna Pusić just held an urgent press conference to address the allegations made by Večernji list

After this morning's shocking cover of Večernji list which screamed „We're losing thePiran bay“, Croatian Minister of foreign and European affairs Vesna Pusić held an urgent press conference in Zagreb. "We are extremely concerned about the allegations published in today's papers regarding the arbitrary proceedings between Croatia and Slovenia before the Arbitrary tribunal" – stated Pusić. "Should it become clear that there were indeed contacts between the arbitrary judge and the Slovenian representatives, that would drastically change the situation. Any kind of negotiation between them is shocking and unacceptable and we will request a full inquiry to determine just how much truth is in these allegations"- she continued.

Pusić once again reminded that all judges of the Arbitrary tribunal must act independently and impartially and Croatia entered this procedure trusting the international legal institutions. However, she also mentioned that her team had their suspicions last spring when Slovenian Minister of foreign affairs, stated he has unofficial information that the final decision will be in Slovenia's favour.

So what's the big deal? Well, apparently, at least according to Vecernji list who also claims to have transcripts of the conversations between the Slovenian member of the Arbitrary tribunal Jernej Sekolec and Simona Drenik from the Slovenian Ministry of foreign affairs, Sekolec was conveying details from a classified discussion between the President of the Arbitrary tribunal Gilbert Guillame and other members of the committee. And it doesn't end there. Serbian media are also reporting that not only was the Slovenian side lobbying strongly with the judges (which is strictly forbidden) but they also organised dinners with the judges.

Since it is claimed that the transcripts also include a statement apparently made by the president of the Tribunal saying that Slovenian side got exactly what it wanted in regards to the sea border  and that at least 2/3 of the Piran bay will go to Slovenia, Croatian authorities have every reason to worry.

The final decision will be made by the end of the year and let us remind you that the decision will be final without a possibility of an appeal.
