Croatian Foreign Minister Attends G7 Meeting in Toronto

ZAGREB, April 23, 2018 - Croatian Foreign Minister Marija Pejčinović Burić attended an informal meeting of the Group of Seven (G7) in Toronto on Sunday and on that occasion she spoke about Croatia's experiences from the war of independence in the 1990s and the peaceful reintegration of its Danube region.

The Group of Seven (G7) is an informal grouping of seven of the world’s advanced economies consisting of Canada, France, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan and Italy. Canada is holding the rotating presidency of the group in 2018, and one of the priorities of its presidency is the empowerment of women as a key to building peace and reducing poverty.

Croatia was one of seven non-members that were invited for the Toronto gathering. Apart from Croatia, the other six non-members whose representatives attended the event were Ecuador, Ghana, Guatemala, Jamaica, Colombia and Panama.

Concerning gender equality in the present-day Croatia, the foreign minister said that her country had made "an impressive progress" at the legislative and institutional levels and also in practice.

Women are included in Croatia's defence sector, and in the security sector the portion of women is already 40%. Furthermore, in decision-making in diplomacy, their participation has reached 50%, the minister said.
