ZAGREB, May 9, 2018 - Social Democratic Party (SDP) leader Davor Bernardić said on Wednesday it was tragic that the symbols of the antifascist struggle were being removed and streets and squares renamed in numerous municipalities and towns in Croatia.
A recent example is the renaming of Marshal Tito Square in Zagreb, he said in parliament. "Those without any idea or vision for the future are revising history and renaming streets and squares, while at the same time our people are walking down European streets and squares looking for jobs."
Antifascism was the only response to evil, so today we must nurture its positive legacy, said Bernardić. "Young people in Croatia must know, and in order to know they must hear and learn in school, what kind of crime was committed in World War II. This only shows how important it is to have a clear stance on this atrocity which bloodthirstily killed millions, dozens of millions of innocent civilians."
He said some today did not even comment on antifascism, while others were ashamed. "The proof is that (parliament) wouldn't sponsor the marking of Victory Day (May 9)."
"The Croatian constitution very clearly confirmed that the Partisans were the only legitimate army in Croatia in World War II. On the other side we have the Ustasha who were on the side of the defeated fascist ideologies and committed horrible crimes such as the one in Jasenovac," Bernardić said, referring to the WWII concentration camp in Croatia.
