Serbia to Improve Education in Croatian Language

By 27 May 2018

ZAGREB, May 27, 2018 - The number of Croatian sections in secondary schools in Subotica, Serbia, will be doubled this autumn, the "Hrvatska Riječ" Vojvodina-based weekly in the Croatian language reported, adding that classes in Croatian are being launched in the town's nursing school, one of the most attractive secondary schools, and that all this is the result of promises made by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić.

As of autumn, Croat students will be able to choose education programmes in three secondary schools: the Secondary School, the Technical School and the Nursing School.

The new Croatian sections and education programmes are the result of an agreement reached in February this year between the leadership of the ethnic Croat community and President Vučić, Tomislav Žigmanov, president of the Democratic Alliance of Croats in Vojvodina (DSHV) party, said.

This decision by Serbia's education ministry confirms that issues that are important to the Croat community are being approached responsibly and that agreements are being honoured. This shows that President Vučić is taking his promises seriously, which encourages Croats and strengthens their trust in state institutions, Žigmanov said.

Six elementary schools in Subotica and Bački Monostor, too, have classes in Croatian.

More than 400 pupils attend classes in Croatian and as many children take special, supplementary Croatian language and elements of the national culture lessons once a week.
