12 Illegal Migrants Injured in Traffic Accident Near Rijeka

By 22 June 2018

A van with migrants ended up in a ditch next to the Zagreb-Rijeka motorway.

At the Čavle junction, which is part of the Rijeka-Zagreb highway, a traffic accident occurred on Friday morning. In the early morning, a van with Italian registration plates ended up in a ditch near the motorway, reports Index.hr on June 22, 2018.

The van was being driven by a Hungarian national who lost control of the vehicle due to high speed.

A spokesperson for the Primorje-Gorski Kotar Police Department confirmed that the traffic accident occurred in the morning. “At about 7.45 this morning, there was an accident near Čavle when a driver, a Hungarian national, lost control of the vehicle in a curve and the vehicle overturned,” the spokesperson confirmed.

All passengers were transported to the Rijeka Clinical Hospital Centre where they were provided with medical assistance. The spokesperson said that the passengers’ nationalities were being determined. “Criminal investigation of the driver is underway for causing the accident,” she added.

According to unofficial information published by the Novi List daily, the passengers were citizens of Syria. It appears they were migrants trying to reach the European Union.

Unofficially, apart from the driver who speaks a little English, other passengers do not speak foreign languages, so no one managed to communicate with them so far. The driver apparently picked up the migrants near a tunnel, but he could not describe which tunnel it was.

According to a report from the Croatian Auto Club (HAK), one lane of the motorway was closed due to this traffic accident, which caused traffic delays.
