Refugees Resettled from Turkey to Croatia

By 11 July 2018

ZAGREB, July 11, 2018 - Another group of refugees, the fourth since the end of last year, who have chosen Croatia as their final destination, have been resettled from Turkey to Croatia.

Five Syrian families arrived in Zagreb on Tuesday, 24 people in all, 11 of whom are minors, the Interior Ministry reported on its web site. Two of the families chose Croatia as their final destination because of their connections with other families that have previously settled in Croatia as part of a resettlement and relocation programme.

To date a total of 105 people have been relocated from Turkey to Croatia. The first group of 40 arrived in November last year and were followed by an additional 36 people in late January. A family of five arrived in April.

As has been the case with the previous arrivals, these Syrian families have already undergone a culture orientation course in Turkey and can immediately start integrating in Croatian society. The families will initially be accommodated at the asylum centre in Kutina where they will officially apply for international protection. They will then be provided with more permanent housing in a town in Croatia.

The latest arrivals are part of the European scheme for the relocation and resettlement of nationals from third countries or stateless people who meet criteria for international protection as prescribed by the European Council.

The Interior Ministry noted that it was continuing with the migrant resettlement programme and together with other EU member states was establishing a protective mechanism aimed at protecting human lives and avoiding unwanted situations that have occurred with illegal migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea.
