HDZ Deputy Leader Scandal Spreads into Elite Prostitution

By 2 October 2018

HDZ deputy president Milijan Brkić allegedly leaked confidential information about an investigation into elite prostitution.

HDZ deputy president Milijan Brkić has been hit by another scandal. After the “fake text messages scandal,” in which Brkić’s close friend has been arrested for leaking confidential police investigation information, there are now allegations that Brkić himself has informed members of a criminal group which was engaged in elite prostitution organisation that they were under investigation. This allegedly happened in 2011, when Brkić was deputy police director, reports Nacional on October 2, 2018.

The “elite prostitution scandal” shook Croatia in 2011. In its centre were the 61-year-old masseur Nebojša Perunović called Pančo and then 24-year-old Sara Sikirić. Pančo had a massage salon in Zagreb; he knew many athletes and influential people in the city, as well as a number of girls who wanted to make their name known in the entertainment circles.

He established an elite prostitution chain together with Sara Sikirić, who was his associate. Their trial was closed to the public, and the names of their influential clients have never been revealed. Pančo and his assistant admitted everything; Pančo received a five year suspended prison and had to pay 100,000 kuna, while Sikirić received a suspended sentence of two years and had to pay 25,000 kuna.

However, according to police documents which were now published by Nacional, Milijan Brkić allegedly informed them that they were under police investigation. At the time, a special investigation was launched and it was reportedly determined that Brkić really did what he was informally accused of.

A police investigation report written on 25 July 2011 states: “During the criminal investigation, several people were questioned. It was found that deputy police director Milijan Brkić provided data about the implementation of special investigation measures.”

The report is titled “Compromise of Special Investigative Measures”, and it was submitted to the then chief of the Criminal Police Directorate Vitomir Bijelić. The report states that Sara Sikirić repeatedly contacted a person who told her that she was under special measures. That person was an N.S. After one meeting with N.S., Sikirić entered the name and surname Milijan Brkić in her mobile phone, then found his picture on the internet and saved it to her iPhone. That same mobile phone with Brkić's photo was later taken by investigators from Sikirić. N.S. admitted to the police that he knew Sara Sikirić and that he knew Milijan Brkić since they served together in a special police unit and they talked every 15 days or so.

However, it was found that the person lied. Namely, the investigators found that, from the beginning of 2011 to the end of June, he contacted Brkić by telephone as many as 64 times.

A formal investigation against Brkić was not initiated, the scandal was swept under the carpet, and Brkić soon he left the police and has since become one of the most influential politicians in Croatia.
