Vukovar Veterans to Collect a Million Signatures for a Referendum

By 9 September 2015

A referendum campaign begins for Vukovar.

Veterans from Vukovar have today officially began with the organization of a referendum on Vukovar as a town of complete and lasting piety. That was announced at a press conference by the veterans' leader Tomislav Josić who is sure that over a million signatures for the referendum will be collected. The collection of signatures required for the referendum will begin in mid-October, reports Vecernji List on September 9, 2015.

"With the referendum, we want to legally ensure adequate, complete and lasting piety for Vukovar which sublimates and symbolizes all the suffering of the Croatian people. Vukovar is also Škabrnja, and Bleiburg, and Dubrovnik. We are going to achieve a victory on the basis of which we are going to build new victories", said Josić inviting all who can help in the organization of the referendum to get involved.

"Get involved, let's defend Vukovar, let's defend Croatia", said Josić. Recalling the thousands of young people who have left Croatia and the bad economic situation, Josić said that the referendum will not bring about the immediate solution for all the troubles that have been imposed on Croatia, but will lift up the people. "It will create unity around something that is on all our hearts. Until Vukovar is a place of peace and piety, it will not move forward. If Vukovar cannot move forward, Croatia cannot move forward", said Josić.

The Vukovar veterans have recalled the collected signatures for the referendum on the use of the Cyrillic alphabet, which has been, in their opinion, unconstitutionally banned. According to Josić, since the ban on the referendum Croatia has been in a constitutional crisis. "We are aware of that, but what could we have done against that unconstitutional decision? The only thing we could have done was to physically restore the sovereignty to whom it belongs – the people. We did not do that. We have consciously decided not to do anything because we do not want to create chaos", said the Vukovar veterans.
