By 26 November 2016

The Croatian team took the lead 2-1 in Zagreb against Argentina after the pair Marin Čilić-Ivan Dodig outplayed the opponent combination Juan Martin Del Potro/Leonardo Mayer with 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4), 6-3 in two hours and 42 minutes of play

Čilić and Dodig have brought Croatia to the brink of seizing the second Davis Cup trophy, as the history of this competition states Croatia has never lost after leading 2-1. Čilić substituted the announced Franko Škugor, while Del Potro played instead of Guido Pelle. In the great atmosphere of Arena Zagreb Marin and Ivan did not lose a set and showed why they are unbeatable in the Davis Cup, Jutarnji List reported on November 26, 2016.

No serves were lost in the first set, with the Croatian pair taking the lead in the tie break with 3-0 and 4-1. Dodig and Čilić took the lead in the second set with 3-1, the Argentineans evened up at 4-4, only to reach another tie break where the Međugorje pair once again dominated. In the third set the Croatian pair at 3-1 made the key break that led to victory, so the Croatian team is only one point away from winning the trophy and repeating the success from 2005.

After the first day the score was even. Marin Čilić brought Croatia to a lead with a 6-3, 7-5, 3-6, 1-6, 6-2 victory over Federic Delbonis, while Del Potro brought Argentina their first point by defeating Ivo Karlović with 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-3, 7-5.

In the last day of the finals, at 14h on Sunday the top players of both teams will play, Marin Čilić and Juan Martin Del Potro, and after them in the possibly deciding fifth match Ivo Karlović and Federico Delbonis.
