It seems that after 13 years and more than 500 games playing for Shakhtar, the captain has asked to leave the club.
Vecernji List reports on 9 December, 2016 that Darijo Srna, captain of Shakhtar Donetsk, has requested permission to leave the club in January for a move to Barcelona, claims Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo.
Shakhtar Donetsk manager Paulo Fonseca has also confirmed on Wednesday that he knows of Srna's interest in Barcelona, but hopes that the legend of the club will not go away.
But it seems that after 13 years and more than 500 games in the Shakhtar jersey, it is time for the captain to part with the club.
"If Darijo decides to go, I'll be on his side. He gave everything for Shakhtar and we will be proud of whatever he decides. We hope that his wishes will be fulfilled," said the club’s president Rinat Akhmetov on Goal.
However, there could be one major problem in the implementation of the transfer, and that is the salary. For Shakhtar, Srna earns around 4 million euros, a pay that Barcelona certainly will not give.
In fact, Croatian footballer Ivan Rakitic is paid around 4.5 million euros, and it would be very difficult to put both Srna and Rakitic in the same payment class. If a move to the club is in order, Srna will have to considerably take a pay cut.
Since 13 years and 500 games is a wonderful feat, congrats to you Srna and we look forward to your next move!
